Avianca has finally brought a much needed new lounge to Miami’s J concourse, giving more options to Star Alliance premium passengers flying from this popular US gateway. Partnering with TAP Air Portugal, this is Avianca’s 11th lounge globally, and with more than a dozen flights a day, Miami is a key international destination for the carrier.

“At Avianca, we continue to enhance the travel experience for our passengers. This new VIP lounge is just the beginning: in 2025, we will open two additional lounges, launch new routes in Business Class Americas, and introduce renewed experiences in Insignia. With this investment, we are reinforcing our focus on comfort, convenience, and exceptional service, ensuring travelers enjoy an unforgettable experience while traveling through one of our most important markets, like Miami,” said Frederico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca.

But this isn’t just a great benefit for Avianca, it’s also of benefit to the other Star Alliance carriers that operate from the terminal, taking some of the strain away from the often over-populated nearby Turkish Airlines lounge.

For TAP it’s the airline’s first lounge outside of Portugal too, and the two airlines are ensuring that there’s a distinct offering for the two key demographics that will be enjoying the space. “Miami is now home to the first TAP VIP lounge outside of Portugal, and its goal is to bring a little bit of Portugal to life in Miami,” said Sofia Lufinha, Customer Service Director at TAP.

“Here, with all the comforts of a new business class VIP lounge, our customers can enjoy their favorite meals and drinks, including cheeses and pastries like Portuguese pastéis de nata, Portuguese red wine, vinho verde, and port wine. This is all part of TAP’s commitment to providing the most comfortable travel experience for our passengers.”

It isn’t a small lounge either, at 6,559 square feet, the space, situated in concourse J, near Gate J6 has capacity for no less than 337 passengers, albeit the lounge only has 158 seats. Combining contemporary design with ample space, it features quiet zones, business areas, and family spaces, ensuring a welcoming environment for all travellers.

The space features a central lounge and dining area with a mixed range of low top tables, dining tables and counter top seats that allow for a variety of needs, and the seats are modern and comfortable in design, but this is certainly a space geared towards a short stay rather than a longer visit. In usual style for South American lounges, there’s also a TV room, which features two large TVs and seating areas just off the main lounge area. There’s also a business centre, although we find that a weird option right now, as it doesn’t really reflect the trends we see in lounge use these days.

There’s also a small, functional kids room, which will help keep sound levels down. The VIP lounge offers a wide range of food and beverage options, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner served throughout the day. The menu includes both hot and cold dishes, Portuguese pastéis de nata pastries, sandwiches, soups, salads, a variety of cheeses, fruits, and bread.

When it comes to Avianca’s greater ambition to offer a better product both in the sky and on the ground, this lounge actually feels more contemporary than its flagship lounge in Bogota. To see our recent trip with Avianca and the enhancements seen in the skies, take a look at the video below.
